The colony-forming-unit number printed in bold on the front of a probiotic bottle is, on its own, close to meaningless. That is the limitation nobody puts on the label, and it is the first thing I check before I ever look at price or star rating.

A CFU count tells you how many live organisms were present at the moment of manufacture, or sometimes at the moment of testing — the label rarely specifies which. It says nothing about which strains survived gastric acid and bile to reach the intestine, whether those strains are the ones studied in dogs at all, or whether the count on day one still holds by the expiration date. A jar advertising twenty billion CFU of an unnamed, untested blend is not automatically superior to a jar with two billion CFU of a single strain backed by a feeding trial. First, flip to the supplement facts panel and look for genus, species, and strain code — not a marketing name for a “blend.” If the label won’t name the strain, that alone is disqualifying for me, regardless of the CFU count next to it. The honest counterargument is that some unnamed-blend best sellers do carry real manufacturing rigor behind the scenes — a strong sales rank doesn’t guarantee poor quality any more than it guarantees good quality, it just isn’t the variable that tells you either way.
