Check this before you panic about the antibiotics

  • Timing — did the diarrhea start during the course, right after the last pill, or days later? Each points to a different cause.
  • Appetite and energy — still eating, still greeting you at the door? That’s a different animal than a dog who’s flat and refusing food.
  • Stool character — soft-serve is not the same problem as watery, mucousy, or bloody stool.
  • Duration — under 2-3 days with an otherwise normal dog is usually self-limiting; beyond that, it’s a vet visit.
  • What else changed — new treat, new food, table scraps, a trash raid — antibiotics get blamed for a lot that isn’t actually about antibiotics.
  • Underlying reason for the antibiotics — a dog treated for a GI infection was already primed for loose stool before the drug ever entered the picture.
